In the more recent years, permanent color techniques are being widely performed for camouflage therapy such as creating illusion.
Maria Perez, has performed procedures for over 25 years. She is currently working with over 4 physicians. She will combine the Art of Camouflage to creating realistic procedures. Maria will discuss proper colour choices, needle selection, shading, textural creation and techniques to create the illusion of normal skin variances that rely on proper pigment mixing to mimic undertones that help minimize disfigurement.

Most of the pictures were taken immediately after the treatment.
You may notice a little redness, like a blush, surrounding the application area.
This is normal and goes away in a few hours.
The glistening skin in some pictures is the result of an ointment applied to soothe the skin and assist in the healing process.
Since Dr Leif Sigurdson MD and FRCSC has moved out of province, I am now collaborating with Dr Steve Morris. Dr. Steve Morris of the QEII Health Science Centre is a renowned plastic surgeon in his field. Some referrals also come fromDr. D. Hayden, Dr. M. Mac Care and Dr. B. Samuel.
This state of the art procedure has been performed for a variety of make-up enhancements for hundreds of years. Permanent make-up can offer subtle encouragement and enhancement to clients. In the more recent years, permanent color techniques are being widely performed for camouflage therapy such as creating illusion. Cosmetic procedures
Enhancing eyebrows is the most requested procedure. The hair stroked blends and looks extremely natural. It is ideal for eyebrows.
Other enhancing facial features are lip line & color, upper and lower eyeliners.
Corrective procedures
Cancer patients may re-create natural looking hairstroked eyebrow beforehand to avoid the after effects from chemo treatments and clients who have had chemotherapy often suffer permanent eyebrows loss and benefit greatly from permanent eyebrows.
Areola and nipple restoration (following breast reconstruction). This procedure can be life-changing for patients.
Post breast augmentation or reconstruction surgery.
Alopecia patients benefit tremendously by implanting pigment underneath the skin.
Cleft lip patients benefit from this reconstructive procedure for permanent lip shape enhancement.
Vitiligo which has no known cause or cure may be camouflaged with permanent cosmetics.
Camouflage of Scars and the re-pigmentation of certain scars.
Hair Follicles Simulation. Recreate natural hair follicles and give the illusion of stubble, to give the illusion of thicker hair, by adding pigment to the affected area we can simulate the appearance of hair.
THE MOST POPULAR TREATMENTS IS PERMANENT EYEBROWS
The correct eyebrow design can take years off a woman’s face. As women mature, eyebrows thin out and even disappear. natural eyebrows are in vogue. Hair simulation and a soft, powdery effect using feathering (a combination of strokes and powder) are the most commonly selected procedures. The demand has never been greater, and it’s no surprise.
Eyelash Enhancement
They create a natural frame around the eye, one that is often not naturally present. To create the appearance of this natural frame, one can elect to have permanent lash enhancement. This procedure places color between the eyelashes, creating a soft and natural frame. It’s great for those who wear little eye makeup but also provides a terrific base to add to eye makeup.
Fair blondes benefit profoundly from lash enhancement since their eye- lashes are generally light. Also, women who have makeup allergies or wear eyeglasses are good candidates since both a lack of makeup and the presence of glasses fade the color of the eyes. Lush eyelashes have become a major focus, lighter shades last one to three years, and darker colors last two to five years.
Lip liner and Lip colour not only defines the existing lip, but it will also augment the size of the lid or camouflage many scars, such as a cleft lip or anyone with a loss of natural lip color because of the aging process will benefit dramatically from this procedure.
Lips denote youth and it doesn't take an extreme plumping to make clients look younger .
Color is a powerful medium; it’s more than enough to make a difference when combined with re-establishing the perimeters of the vermillion boarder. What woman wouldn’t like a soft, natural lip color to remain when she places her napkin down? Having this hint of color and definition on her lips, where she only has to add a clear or tinted gloss, is a thrill.
Hair transplant patients would also benefit from cosmetic tattooing to cover scars and to re-pigment the scalp.
For men who have had Hair loss, scalp or face scars, burns, or lumps removed from their faces or scalp areas, generally leaves those areas white and free of hair ‘stubble’. These areas look very different from the rest of the face or scalp where routine shaving leaves a stubble look. The effect of hair follicle illusion provides an even and natural look over the entire face. Additionally, skin color areas that have become too light can be restored to create an even tonescalp

Is it painful?
For patient confort, a topical numbing anesthetics is applied to the area prior to and during the procedure. This provides comfort to ensure a perfect procedure. It is generally minimal, if any discomfort.
How is it done?
At U Spa only Sterilized and disposable needles are used to implant desired look and color into the dermis layer. Using different techniques such as blending, shading and/or filling in with pigment or feathering (hair strokes) offers an edgy and sophisticated look. This technique involves using pigment to create strokes that will look like hair. This technique results in a subtle and more natural look for eyebrows for example.
Safety Considerations
Permanent cosmetics should be completely safe when proper sterilization and disinfection guidelines are practiced. Here are some of the guidelines:
Every needle used should be new and sterile for each client.
Disposable sterilized (one-time use) machine parts should be purchased by the artist, and disposed of in a sharps container immediately after the procedure.
Personal protection equipment such as disposable one-time use aprons and gloves should be new for each client and changed during the procedure when needed.
"Unsterile tattooing equipment and needles can transmit infectious diseases such as hepatitis."
Expectations after the procedure?
The complete healing generally takes 3 to 4 weeks.
The first few days are a little overwhelming but the color always fades rapidly into the skin.
When the procedure is just completed the pigment is sitting close to the surface of the skin and therefore appears much darker than what it really is or will become.
Will I need a patch test?
At U Spa, a patch test will be performed at the time of the consultation to assess for allergies.
This test is simple and is done on the scalp or directly over the area to be tattooed if color is required.
A period of 24 hours must elapse in order to verify the results of the patch test.
Pigments which contain iron oxide are rarely causing allergic reactions.
How long does the procedure take?
The consultation and procedure will be completed in 1 to 4 hours depending on the procedure being performed and size of area. "It is the artistry involved that takes the most time". The application of topical anesthetics do require a waiting period of 25-30 minutes.
Do I have a choice of colour?
The appropriate color and look is thoroughly discussed and decided along with the client's approval and technician recommendations. The darker colors last longer than lighter colors. So eyebrow colors that are appropriate for lighter skin types would likely need a color refresher each year, while the darkest colors can last up to five years.
Will I get to see my creation before the procedure?
Yes, your approval is required before initiating any procedure.
What is involved in the healing and post-care?
There is some redness and slight swelling immediately following the procedure. This disappears quickly after the procedure. It is critical to keep the area moist with the appropriate or recommended product.
An After Care Balm must be applied over the tattooed area. ( 3-5 times per day and /or as often as needed, you during the course of the day and for 2–3 weeks.
This product is available at the Clinic.
Apply ice after the procedure is helpful for some. NEVER apply directly the ice on the area ) this will affect the colour!
You need to avoid:
Extreme sweating, saunas, steam baths.
Sun and tanning salons.
Pools with chlorine for 1 to 2 weeks after procedure.
Potential after effects
Eyebrows and eyelashes may show little after effect. Eyebrows rarely produce any bruising. Lips may show slight to moderate swelling, depending on the amount of work performed. Fewer effects are seen for a lip liner than that of a full lip color. If bruising does occur on lips, it’s typically minor and subsides within a few days, during which there is some tenderness. The color may be much darker than they may expect for the first 3 to 5 day on the eyebrows and 6 to 10 days for the lips.
Will I need more than one appointment?
Yes after your initial appointment you will automatically book a perfecting or touch up appointment, usually 4 to 6 weeks after the initial appointment. This second appointment (included in the initial price) this second appointment will perfect and refine the final look.
What are the pigments composed of and are they safe to used on all skin types?
The pigments are composed of mineral, iron oxide base colorants. U Spa uses only pigments that are formulated from powders taken from the FDA’s Food Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) listings. The Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals considers pigments formulated from the FD&C listing the safest origin of pigment powders for permanent cosmetic pigment formulations and required to list the ingredients on their pigment labels and Yes, the pigments use at U Spa are safe for all skin types.
Who performs this procedure?
Maria Perez owner/operator of U Spa is a trained and qualified micro-pigmentation technician. To stay aware of any unexpected side effects, any professional permanent cosmetic technicians will always require that clients fill out a history profile to assess different factors.
How long does it last?
The longevity of permanent makeup and the duration of the pigment varies from client to client. normally a 3 to 5 years. Lifestyle and after care are big factors. Some of other factors that could influence the duration are:
tanning beds and over-exposure to the sun
chemicals in hot tubs and pools
all creams with Vitamin A or Alpha hydroxy acids and other active products.
a person’s own body chemistry
sebaceous activity
cellular turnover
Skin treatments and certain types of medications can also adversely impact color integrity.
To protect your investment, I encourage patient to apply sun protection regularly and to avoid the use of products with exfoliants and laser treatments on the pigmented areas. "Some people I did 10 years ago look great today, and some I did a year ago need another procedure.” Everybody is different, but the vast majority of cases a significant amount of fading occurs each year. Re-enhancements are recommended to keep a fresh appearance.
restriction during healing period?
Yes, you need to avoid:
Extreme sweating, saunas, steam baths.
Sun and tanning salons.
Pools with chlorine for 1 to 2 weeks after procedure.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hemophiliacs, diabetic patients who uses needles injections or person that have or ever had a cold sores or blister should take preventive action. To avert any complication with lip procedures, Valtrex medication is recommended 3 days prior and 4 days after any lip procedures. This will avert the stimulation of any potential cold sore which could remove the newly applied pigment.
How to avoid disappointing results:
Make sure the clinic and partitioner has a business license, certificate and found competent.
How many procedures has the practitioner performed and how long have they been doing it?
Ask to meet people that the practitioner has performed procedures on. "Don't rely on testimonials or pictures. "Anybody can create a portfolio by stealing pictures from a web site."
Consider aesthetics, safety, and comfort with the partitioner. Some may know the science but not the artistry and some may know the artistry but not the science. The best choice are referrals and reputation
Don't adopt a trendy look... that could look dated in 10 or 20 years. Remember cosmetic styles changes..!
Only a handful of masters can fix mistakes. Get it right the first time. because it gets progressively more complicated after that.
To avoid infection, make sure you see the practitioner remove a fresh needle from a package. Sterilization and use of topical anesthetics."
Please note that the removal of pigment is difficult. Therefore, I recommend all clients to carefully select their technician. If you are not sure, please shop around for someone professional, with years of experience.
